Insomnia is a serious disorder and effective treatment is crucial to getting the sleep you need and improve the quality of your life.
In the past 3 decades research has shown that non drug treatments for insomnia can improve sleep in all age groups. The treatment recommended is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for insomnia (CBT-I)
The Insomnia Clinic offers a programme of CBT-I which is a structured programme but is also tailored towards the individual. It teaches the individual lifelong tools to manage and treat their insomnia. It trains people to use techniques that address the mental (or cognitive) factors associated with insomnia, such as the ‘racing mind’, and to overcome the worry and other negative emotions that accompany the experience of being unable to sleep.
Behaviours also influence how we sleep. When an individual is sleeping badly they develop coping mechanisms to deal with the lack of sleep. These are usually bad habits in terms of sleep so these must be changed and new habits need to be learned.
The programme teaches the individual to use their own body clock and sleep drive to control their sleep pattern.
It is important to realize that not everyone who has problems sleeping has insomnia. The Insomnia Clinic works closely with several sleep consultants within the top sleep disorder labs in the country.
